Lucky was dead serious about protecting her. He’d always been watchful, but after Liz’s unfortunate visit going out with him in public could be tricky. Case in point, their last visit to the grocery store.

For whatever reason, Lucky adored them. He eschewed most of the food they offered – processed, unnatural and unhealthy were his favorite adjectives – but he loved the displays, the long, neat rows of colorful cans and boxes she often caught him running down with the tips of his long fingers.

Whole Foods was high on his list – at least it was until he learned they were under investigation for overcharging customers; Lucky had a highly evolved sense of justice, Lou observed – but Trader Joe’s was his favorite. He very much approved of its produce section and could spend hours – an exaggeration, but that’s what it felt like to Lou who habitually grabbed the first non-dinged fruit on offer and fled – squeezing things and sniffing their skins.

One day, Potts sent them to replace the organic eggs, cashew milk, cheese and wine – “And a good bit of salmon or tilapia if there is any.” – Lucky was engrossed in the cheese display, and Lou was playing on her phone, half watching a large, rather harried man blaze his way through the aisles. The child’s mother glared. The man did not notice.

Distracted, she wandered closer to see who he’d run into next when he suddenly changed course and came straight at her – she was standing near the wine – that basket swinging as he barreled to a stop, and coming a hairs breadth from her Liz shoulder.

There was no pain at all from the wound, but Lou still jerked away, not wanting to be hit and have even a hint of that wretched throbbing return. The man looked up, saw her and opened his mouth. She never got the chance to hear what he had to say – perhaps it was an apology – because Lucky appeared in a rush, his gilded hair streaked by sunshine, and swatted the man aside like a drunken bee.

He landed on his ass in a sprawl, mouth agape – as were the mouths of all those who stood nearby – his basket upended and the wine he held broken, leaving him with only the neck of the bottle, the rest pooling rapidly on the floor.

Lou just managed not to laugh. It was easy when she caught the look at Lucky’s face. He looked as cold and remote as a God, his full lips now a thin, angry line as he glared daggers at the man, his long arms wrapped protectively around her.

“You will be careful,” he
